Your Business and Water Do Not Mix

1/24/2023 (Permalink)

No matter the cause of flooding, water damage can have a detrimental effect on your commercial building. Whether a pipe burst in a bathroom overnight or floodwaters from torrential rains caused your building’s basement to flood, you may believe that since the damage is already done, there is no rush to have the water drained. However, floodwater can cause damage quicker than you might think, and there are several benefits to having it removed as soon as possible.

1. Mold Can Form Rapidly After a Flood

The environment indoors changes quickly after a flood. Water might be absorbed by carpeting and drywall, which can increase a room’s humidity. In fact, humid conditions can contribute to mold growth and cause this fungus to grow as soon as 24 hours after a flood. Having a professional water damage and mold remediation company come in right away to drain away flood waters and perform mold cleanup may reduce overall repair costs.

2. Humidity May Warp Wood

After a flood, the humidity that builds indoors can cause any wooden building materials to warp if mitigation does not take place within at least a day or two. If standing water is not removed, it can increase the amount of water vapor in the air and cause considerable damage to wooden furniture, molding or flooring. It is wise to remove furniture as soon as it is safe to do so and store it in a cool, dry room, away from sunlight, until affected rooms are repaired and restored.

3. Clean Water Floods Can Cause Damage

If flooding in your building was caused by a plumbing mishap, the results can be just as detrimental. For example, if a pipe burst in the break room, the water can affect electrical systems and equipment or short them out, which can increase the risk of fire. Draining away standing water can reduce these potential hazards.

Flooding in your commercial building can create a variety of problems for you as a business owner. However, whether the flooding was caused by a pipe burst or by a storm, acting quickly can prevent the worst of the damage and lower repair costs. SERVPRO of Joliet is always here to help! We are here to make it "Like it never even happened," for you!

Smelly Office?

12/20/2022 (Permalink)

How many times have you walked into the kitchen at work and it smells like burnt death?  Someone cooked something that lingers but you are pretty sure they cooked up some sort of roadkill or tried to burn the building down.  Did you know that SERVPRO can get rid of those and many other smells for you?

Trained Experts

As experts in deodorization, SERVPRO of Joliet is trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors. These odors can come from a number of sources both inside and outside a structure.

SERVPRO teaches IICRC technical classes in the proper removal of odors. Masking and other shortcuts don't work when your odor problem is serious or persistent.

We have the training and equipment to identify and eliminate these offensive odors. By identifying the cause of the odor and determining the conditions in which it contacts any surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace. Our technicians have access to several odor-removal products.

The science of identifying and eliminating odors can be a tricky thing, so give us a call, and leave the restoration to us.

Doing an Exterior Check on your Home and Commercial Space

11/23/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Joliet has the expertise needed to handle any restoration job including fire, water, mold, and smoke damage, and also knows how important it is to pay attention to the exterior of your home and commercial space. Especially with seasons changing and many days of rain to come, faulty areas may allow for water to enter, leading to damage. Here are some things around the exterior that should be checked regularly to keep your space running at its highest potential:

  • Clean out your gutters so rain can easily flow through them and drain away from the roof. Gutters filled with leaves, sticks and other debris can become damaged or not work as well.
  • Check that your gutter’s downspouts are properly attached to allow water to drain away from the home. A detached or broken spout can lead to water flooding outside.
  • Make sure the sump pumps in your home are operational and have a working battery. An unexpected, failed sump pump may lead to a slew of future problems.
  • Check that garden hoses are properly attached to prevent water from draining into piping.
  • See if the caulking on your windows needs repair. A ripped seal in the window may allow water to enter the home.

Importance Of Sprinkler Systems In Commercial Properties

7/9/2022 (Permalink)

Whether you have purchased a commercial property or are in the process of building a commercial building, before a new company can open for business; it must be in compliance with local, state and federal fire safety standards. As a commercial building owner or property manager, one of your biggest concerns is protecting the investment you've made in your business and the people who work there.

Sprinkler systems can help make your business safer in multiple ways. Sprinklers work by detecting the heat from a fire and automatically turning them on. While the spray from the sprinklers is not always enough to put out the fire, it goes a long way to suppressing the fire and allowing more evacuation time until the fire department can get there.

Fire and water damage not only affects the structure of your building and it's contents but also your emotions. Don't take on the stress of dealing with this on your own, Call SERVPRO of Joliet at 815-436-5735 and let us make this "Like it never even happened."

Getting Prepared For Bad Weather

6/26/2022 (Permalink)

Business owners control many things, but weather isn’t one of them. Be it a snow storm, heavy rain or flooding, sooner or later, bad weather is bound to cause an inevitable hiccup in your business. Are you ready? The time to prepare is not when the forecast predicts a hurricane. Check out these ways to prepare your business for bad weather in Joliet long before it shows up.

Create a Bad Weather Plan

Surprisingly, while business owners make a written plan for many things, weather isn’t always one of the. But bad weather can create a perfect storm of issues, from pipe burst issues to logistical problems. Before those worst cases scenarios become realities, come up with a plan for how to operate in bad weather. It should cover

  • Who will communicate with employees in a weather crisis
  • Evacuation or shelter in place plans
  • What the overall business weather policy is Form Evacuation Plans

There are times when weather poses immediate danger. One example is if a snow storm leads to a fallen tree or debris that damages part of your facility. Having a plan for leaving the building is ideal for such scenarios. Outline the route employees should take to safety and appropriate maps to ensure everyone knows how to get out.  Protect Your Building After your employees, protecting your building is the next priority. Invest in backup generators to keep critical devices running and safe while you’re out of the office for bad weather. If flooding is expected, gather sandbags for doors and windows and consider moving furniture and electrical equipment to higher levels to prevent water damage. Whether your business is devastated or merely derailed by a snow storm or other bad weather depends a lot on how well you prepare. Use these tips as a starting point for facing bad weather and storm damage with ease.

Keep Your Commercial Buildings Free of Mold

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

Mold and mildew don’t need very much encouragement to grow. Once it starts, it can spread very quickly. Not only can it cause damage, but it can affect people’s health.

Mold can grow on a variety of surfaces, cloth, carpets, drywall, and wood. With a large commercial building keeping everyone cool or warm, condensation can form and provide the mold the moisture it needs to spread.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Commercial Building Free from Mold

Regular cleanings and maintenance inspections will help keep mold from taking over the building, in particular, areas that are not often used.

1. Deep Cleaning

Start with your HVAC system. Getting it cleaned, changing or cleaning the filters, and keeping it in great form will help stop the spread of mold spores. The vents, ducts, and the rest all need to be maintained.

When the air is not moving through the vents, dust and mold can just sit there, so when you turn it back on, the room fills with it all. Any amount of hair, dust, dirt, animal hair and waste, and mold can be in the vents.

The mold can get inside these areas and grow. There are times when you don’t need the system, so have it maintained in the spring and fall, to be safe. Reducing the movement of the mold will help considerably.

2. Dehumidify

Condensation can form during the hot months, during the cold months, at any time. A commercial building will have a lot of people, and people can cause condensation.

A dehumidifier will help draw moisture out of the air. It can make a big difference in a building that is very populated and turning off the heat or air conditioning is not an option.

Put them in areas when moisture is prevalent. Basements, upper floors, kitchens or cafeterias, shower rooms, laundry rooms, and anywhere that has excessive moisture. They are available in different sizes.

3. Make Repairs

Fixing small problems will help them from becoming big problems. Leaks in the roof or foundation, cracks in the walls or foundation, gaps around windows, taps or pipes that drip, or leak, and faulty thermostats.

These can all allow heat and cold air in or out, which means it makes it harder to control the humidity inside the building. Damp patches or pooling water, or a recent flood, should all be taken care of right away. Hire a professional.

4. Regular Checks

Building maintenance should be looking for anything suspicious on a regular basis. Keeping an eye on areas that have higher concentrations of moisture or humidity for signs.

Dark spots, fuzzy patches, musty smells, can all appear anywhere. Carpets, walls, ceilings, floors, and under sinks, behind walls in shower rooms, laundry room, bathrooms, and kitchen areas.

5. Regular Inspections

It’s a great idea to have your maintenance team take care of regular checks and repairs, but hiring a professional to inspect the building can be a great help. They can spot areas that may be developing mold that you are not aware of.

They are also great at finding areas of potential mold, too, so you can stop it before it gets a chance to start.

Commercial Pipe Breaks

3/5/2021 (Permalink)

As we transition from February to March, spring is just around the corner. Spring brings warmer temperatures, but cold temperatures will linger for a while longer. With fluctuating temperatures, the risk of pipes bursting increases, as water within the pipes expands and contracts in response to different temperatures, resulting to increased pressure within the pipes, which can cause pipes to rupture and burst. The water damage that commonly results from burst pipes can have devastating effects on commercial businesses. Therefore, in order to best protect their commercial businesses, it is necessary for business owners to understand the ways in which burst pipes can be avoided, as well as how to effectively react in the event that pipes burst.

Prevention

Protecting your commercial business with an insurance plan that covers water damage resulting from burst pipes is of the utmost importance, given that cleanup services are often costly. In terms of preventative measures, business owners can wrap pipes that are located outside or in unheated places in insulated sleeves. These insulated sleeves can keep pipes warm in cold temperatures, preventing them from freezing. If pipes do freeze, however, it may be beneficial to run water through the pipes in order to prevent them from rupturing. In order to catch leaking pipes before they burst, inspect pipes for small leaks on a regular basis.

If Pipes Burst…

In order to limit the amount of damage inflicted upon your business, be sure to turn off water, heating, and electricity systems immediately upon noticing burst pipes. Important items, such as physical documents and inventory, should be moved to a safe, dry place where they will not be exposed to water damage. In order to spot water damage, look for physical signs, which include discoloration or stains, musty smells, and mold or mildew growth. You can facilitate drying by opening doors and windows in your building, which will help to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. You can trust SERVPRO to work quickly and efficiently in order to remedy water damage caused by burst pipes in your commercial business, so as to avoid any major workplace interruptions.

Top Causes of Fires in Commercial Buildings

1/25/2021 (Permalink)

House fires spike when the weather gets colder. The leading cause of these house fires is the use of heating equipment. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the US Fire Department responds to an average of 50 thousand fires per year just from heating equipment.

Here are a few simple tips that you can follow to prevent house fires in your home this winter:

1.) Be mindful when using space heaters.

Space heaters account for more than two in five of house fires due to heating equipment (source: NFPA). Of these fires, 86% result in fatalities. The biggest cause of space heater fires is having them placed too close to flammable objects. To prevent this, you can follow the "3 feet" rule (see tip #2).

2.) Follow the "3 feet" rule.

A good rule of thumb is to keep anything that is flammable a minimum of three feet from any heating equipment, such as the furnace, fireplace, wood stove and portable space heaters. This will lessen the chance of anything accidentally catching fire.

3.) Turn off all heating equipment before going to bed.

Most heating equipment fires do not occur overnight. However, the ones that do account for almost half of house fire fatalities from heating equipment. Make sure to turn off all heating equipment before going to bed. You are better off using an extra blanket or two than unnecessarily risking your life.

4.) Remember that ovens are not heaters.

Ovens should never be used for a source of heat. This is an inefficient way to heat your house, and it can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Stick to using your oven to make food as it is designed to do.

Top Causes of Fires in Commercial Buildings

12/8/2020 (Permalink)

A fire or smoke damage to your commercial building can have catastrophic consequences. No matter the source, the damage to your business can be costly to you and your customers. Understanding the most common causes of fire damage to commercial properties allows you to better mitigate your risks to your business.

1. The number one cause of commercial fire damage is cooking. Although most commonly occurring in restaurants, any building that has a working kitchen is at risk. High cooking temperatures, flammable oils and grease and multiple people working in close proximity make this an ideal situation for a fire or smoke damage to occur.

2. The second most common cause of fires in commercial buildings is heating equipment. Malfunctioning heaters, boilers and radiators can overheat and lead to fire or smoke damage. Improperly utilized space heaters can also be dangerous.

3. Electrical and lighting equipment is the third most common cause of damage to commercial buildings. Old wiring and overloaded circuits can lead to overheating that can spark a fire or smoke damage.

Knowledge of these common causes of fire and smoke damage to your commercial property is the first step to prevention. Proper maintenance by qualified HVAC technicians and electricians is a first step to minimizing your risks. If your commercial property suffers a fire or smoke damage call the experts at SERVPRO Joliet at 815-436-5735 anytime day or night. Our trained restoration professionals will be on site quickly to assess the damage and create a plan to make your property "Like it never even happened."

Commercial Mold Issues

10/6/2020 (Permalink)

Mold just needs two things to grow: water and humidity. It can infest your business in as little as 48 hours and even the tiniest of unchecked leaks can produce an infestation.

If you think you have mold in your building, you may consider the usual suspects. Mold often shows up in damp, humid places such as basements, attics, and bathrooms. You may discover it under sinks and behind appliances. You also cannot forget to check in air ducts. HVAC cleaning is essential to keeping fungal growth at bay. If you neglect this duty, you could soon discover a mold infestation.

What Causes Mold Growth

Mold spores travel in through the air but can make their way into office buildings through doors and windows as well as on people who come inside. Mold becomes visible and spreads when the following conditions are present:

  • There is standing water
  • There are damp areas in the building
  • There is poor airflow

Mold and Your HVAC System

If you smell a foul odor in the air ducts of your office, mold could be the culprit. Not only can this fungus develop where there is water, but it can also collect on dust. It is common for dust to gather in the HVAC ducts. The challenge is, you will not be able to see the mold inside the duct work, so you will have to pay attention to smells and whether the system is not working efficiently.

Here to Help

HVAC cleaning is the most effective way to eliminate mold from your heating and cooling system. Your best move is to hire an experienced mold remediation company to tackle this job. The professionals have the knowledge, training, and tools to remove dust from the ducts and thus get rid of accompanying mold. You should focus on cleaning vents in your building at least once a year, especially if you have had mold in the past.

We are always “here to help," and have the training, equipment, and expertise to take care of your mold problem. Our goal is to get you back to a clean, healthy home and make it "Like it never even happened.”

Commercial Fires

Before and after cleaning of wall Before and After Picture showing cleaning

Fires are tragic. However when they occur around the holidays they become even more so. They disrupt the lives of homeowners, tenants and businesses and can causes thousands of dollars in damage.
One reason, that mitigating fire damage is so timely and costly is that usually there is smoke, soot and water damage resulting from the fire. Here you can see the amount of soot which gathered in the lobby of this apartment high rise after it suffered an apartment fire. Ironically, the actual fire was contained to a single unit but secondary damage to the building was extensive. If this is the damage in the lobby you can image what the adjacent hallways looked like.
Smoke and soot will permeate every nook and cranny of the affected area and without professional mitigation, completely removing the odor might be difficult. Restoration companies like SERVPRO of Joliet has certified fire technicians who understand the properties of smoke, soot and odor and are able to come up with the proper remedy. We have the specialized equipment to manpower to handle a fire disaster that affects a large area. the cleanup process is extensive because every floor, wall, ceiling and items within the affected area need to be "touched".
Having the specialized equipment and trained personnel is just one reason SERVPRO of Joliet is the leader in smoke, fire and water cleanup and restoration.

Common Water Issues for Businesses

Common Water Issues for Businesses

For a commercial property owner in Joliet, IL, unexpected water problems can be a big issue. Fortunately, a water damage professional can help you assess, clean, and repair damages from any flooding or leaks you may have. Here are a few of the most common water problems a business may face from leaking pipes to foundation cracks.

1. Pipe Breaks

A pipe break can occur in a number of ways. Over time, the pipe can age and loosen in its fittings, or extensive use can lead to pinhole leaks. Extreme heat or cold can also affect a pipe’s integrity. A blocked pipe can lead to pressure buildup and eventually burst.

2. Plumbing Backup

Blocked plumbing can even lead to a toilet backup or sink overflow. When a pipe is blocked, water can take the shortest path out regardless of its intended flow path. Blockages can occur from a number of things, including the buildup of water minerals over time inside a pipe or someone pouring a solidifying material, such as plaster or grease, down a drain.

3. Weather

Extreme weather conditions can also lead to leaking pipes. Cold temperatures can cause the water in pipes to freeze and expand. The expansion puts pressure on the pipe and can create a crack or even cause it to burst altogether. If you know cold weather is coming, you can check with a local professional about what preventive measures to take.

4. Foundation Cracks

Foundation cracks can also become a problem leading to water damage. Water can seep through any cracks and pool, leading to further issues such as mold. Any cracks should be investigated and assessed as soon as possible to determine the best course of action. Water damage can happen to a commercial property. Fortunately, a professional can fix the damage caused by leaking pipes, foundation cracks, backed up toilet, or weather, and help you repair your property.

3 Reasons to Use Board-Up or Tarp Services After a Fire

3 Reasons to Use Board-Up or Tarp Services After a Fire

A large fire in your New Lenox, IL, building can cause damage in a variety of ways. One issue that you might have is missing areas in the roof. If this is the case, you should consider having your roof boarded up or covered in tarp during the fire cleanup and restoration process. The following are some reasons that this is beneficial.

1. Prevent Further Damage From Bad Weather and Debris
Depending on the severity of the fire and the extent of the damage, it might take a while for fire cleanup to be completed. During this period, you don’t want anything to cause further damage as this can cost you precious time as well as money. Rain can cause water damage, and wind can carry debris into the building. Keeping your roof covered will help prevent this.

2. Keep Out Animals
Along with debris, you might find that some furry creatures have found their way inside the building if it is not properly covered. This can cause a variety of problems, so it is best to cover any open spaces to keep any rodents, birds or larger animals out of the property until roof repair is finished.

3. Reduce the Chances of a Break-In
Unfortunately, many people might see your damaged building as an easy target for theft or vandalism. Your building likely has a variety of valuable property inside that would be costly to replace. If there are areas of the building missing, it can be easy for others to take advantage of the situation. Using board-up or tarp services will help deter this, as it will be more difficult to get inside.
Along with fire cleanup and repairs, a fire damage restoration company can perform services to cover up any missing parts of the building. This will help keep your property safe during the process and can help reduce the amount of time and effort it takes to return your building to its previous condition.

Specialist using protective gear while removing mold Mold remediation in Joliet, IL

If you are interested in protecting your commercial property from every conceivable threat, then you need to think of mold, even in Joliet, IL. However, to protect against mold growth, it is necessary to understand the fungus and the remediation process.

What is Mold?

Mold, quite simply, is a fungus. However, what most people imagine when thinking of this fungus is actually a collection of mold spores. It is necessary to understand that spores exist everywhere, and it is nearly impossible to eliminate the presence of these spores even indoors.

What Contributes to Mold Growth?

Moisture is the main contributor to mold development. Therefore, it is necessary to control moisture levels in your property to reduce the risk of a mold infestation. If you ensure that the facility is adequately ventilated and that humidity levels never reach levels of more than 50%, then you are doing more than many other commercial property owners.

Is Special Equipment Required for Mold Removal?

Due to certain risks to the lungs, it is necessary to wear protective clothing during mold removal. Depending on the severity of the infestation, a respirator may be required to protect your lungs and respiratory system from mold spores. In certain situations, it may even be recommended to wear full protective suits, gloves, and goggles.

Should You Hire a Remediation Specialist?

For severe infestations, it is recommended that you hire a remediation specialist in Joliet, IL. However, even small mold problems may require the expertise of licensed and certified professionals. A lot of concern has to do with the specific mold species you are dealing with. Therefore, testing may be required to determine whether the problem is something you can handle on your own.
The goal of prevention is to protect your property and yourself. Now that you understand what mold is and the importance of protective equipment for removal, you can make better decisions if you ever come across mold in your building.

5 Tips for Broken Pipes

10/22/2019 (Permalink)

Review Tips for Broken Pipes

Bursting pipes can cause extensive damage in a commercial property. There are several steps you can take to limit the extent of the damage. 1. Call a Plumber Contact a plumber with an emergency work order to fix a broken pipe. If more than one person is on site, one person should make the call while the other shuts off or collects water. 2. Shut Off the Water Shutting off the flow of water to your building can limit the amount of water that can cause damage. Notify all occupants that the water is turned off. 2. Collect Water in Containers Collect as much water from bursting pipes as possible in any containers you have on hand. Once again, if more than one person is present, you should cycle out containers as each becomes full. These containers will be heavy, and a sturdy cart may help prevent strain or injury. 3. Fix Broken Pipes A plumber should resolve the source of the leak before you can start removing water and restoring the area. Continue to try to mitigate the damage until help arrives. 4. Eliminate All Standing Water Use any method available such as buckets, mops, towels, or a wet vacuum to start getting rid of standing water. You may want to call commercial damage restoration professionals with specialized equipment to pump out water. Water from a burst pipe is clean Category One water. If water leaks through building materials to another floor, it becomes contaminated Category Two water. 5. Dry the Affected Area Prevent mold or other secondary damage by completely drying the area affected by the leak. Use a dehumidifier to draw moisture out of porous or semi-porous building materials and contents. Follow these steps to deal with bursting pipes and water damage. A plumber can help stop the leak, and restoration experts can help prevent further damage.

Mark Yourself Safe

The American Red Cross offers a Safe & Well check-in site to list yourself as safe or find family and friends in situations where communication is difficult to establish.

Facebook also has a feature called Safety Check that is activated after natural disasters or a crisis.  You will receive a notification from Facebook if you’re located in the affected area at that time.
